Emilia Jäger was born on February 3, 1922, in a small village near the Harz Mountains. Her father was a forest ranger. Growing up, she loved wandering the woods with her father, learning about wildlife and foraging. She had a peaceful childhood, far removed from the political tensions rising across Europe.

When the war broke out in 1939, Emilia was only 17, and at first, it seemed like a distant reality to her. However, as the war dragged on and casualties rose, the pressure for every able bodied German to contribute grew.

In 1943, just after her 21st birthday, Emilia was conscripted. While initially working and providing support to the war effort from behind the lines, the increasingly desperate situation on the Eastern and Western Fronts led to her being trained as a frontline soldier. By 1944, she was stationed in various defense operations throughout Germany as Allied forces pressed into her homeland.

The cheerful, energetic girl who once wandered the forests was soon replaced by a hardened soldier, dealing with the traumas of war. Emilia's first battle was a shock, she saw friends and comrades be gunned down beside her, and her hands trembled as she aimed her rifle. Her first confirmed kill was a moment that haunted her for weeks, something she tried not to think about as the war ground on.

As Germany began to fall under the weight of the Allied advances, Emilia found herself participating in the desperate defense of her homeland. She clung to the hope that she might one day return to her quiet life, but each day in battle made that future seem further away. The war changed her, but she remained loyal to her comrades
